Lesbian couples travel from all over the U.S. to place their relationship in the care of Michele O'Mara, LCSW, Certified Imago Therapist.  Why?  Because unlike most therapists, Michele has narrowed the focus of her practice to the needs of lesbian couples in particular, which has allowed her to work with hundreds of lesbian couples over the last decade.

This experience, combined with her ongoing education and research, positions Michele to offer couples more in just a few sessions, than some therapists can offer in a year or two.

What are common issues that couples bring to Michele?

  • emotional or sexual infidelity

  • loss of sexual desire within the relationship

  • falling out-of-love or losing passion

  • growing apart

  • "losing oneself" by becoming too enmeshed

  • power struggles around household responsibilities, finances, and schedules

  • difficulty communicating

  • constant fighting

  • jealousy or possessiveness

  • issues around sexual orientation - not being out, or being "too out" for your partner

  • family rejection or conflict around your relationship

  • creating healthy boundaries around friends and family

  • step-parent or blended lesbian family struggles

  • conflicting desires around parenthood

  • parenting

How can Michele help us?

As a certified Imago Relationship Therapist Michele is able to provide fail-proof communication skills, as well as a whole new way to view relationships, and some explanations for the hurt and frustration that you are currently experiencing with one another.  It is not THAT you are hurt or frustrated that is the problem, it's WHAT you are doing or not doing about those things that is the problem.  All relationships have issues.  What separates the successful relationships from the unsuccessful relationships is HOW you address the issues.

Most relationship challenges are not particularly unique.   There are a handful of common hurts and frustrations in relationships, such as:  (feeling disconnected, feeling controlled, losing passion, losing trust, loss of desire, differing libidos or sex drives, attractions to others, feeling unheard, feeling under appreciated or taken for granted, and feeling "not good enough," for starters. With conscious attention and a little work, these issues are not difficult to resolve, if you WANT to, BELIEVE that you can, and you are willing to do some work.

The solutions to some of your frustrations require that you learn new skills, gain new insights, and exercise new behaviors. Other solutions require that you adopt new perspectives, and develop greater compassion for, and acceptance of, one another.  These are solutions that I can assist you in achieving in fairly short-order.

What is the best way to pursue long-distance counseling with Michele?

 1.  Attend The Imago Couple's Weekend

Come to Indianapolis, IN to attend the Imago Couple's Weekend with Michele O'Mara.  Her office is a short drive from the Indianapolis Airport and there are plenty of affordable hotels nearby, making the trip affordable and convenient.

2.  Marathon Sessions

Schedule a day with Michele.  Bring your relationship to Indianapolis for an entire day, or two, of counseling with Michele.  This intensive experience can be more beneficial than stringing together couple's sessions over a longer period of time.  The cost for these sessions is in 4-hour increments, and you may schedule 4, 6, or 8 hours in one day.

2 hours = $210

4 hours = $415

6 hours = $610

8 hours = $800

3.  Bring Michele to You!

If you have a small group of couples who are interested in participating in the intensive Lesbian Imago Couple's Workshop, she will come to your city for two days.  This will cost $500 per couple (with a minimum of 6 couples, or $3,000 if you have fewer than 6 couples).  She will be responsible for transportation and accommodations.  You are responsible for securing a location (a home, business, or church, with a large gathering space is sufficient) to provide the training and Michele will bring the rest.

What is Imago Relationship Therapy?

Imago therapy is a unique style of relationship counseling created from the Imago Theory developed by Harville Hendrix in his best selling book, Getting the Love You Want.

Hendrix Imago Theory suggests that during our childhood, we develop an imprint of the positive and negative traits of our primary caregivers. This  imprint, which is largely unconscious, is a collection of images and experiences (both positive and negative) that forms what  is called our “IMAGO” (pronounced eh-mah-go).

Imago is simply another word for image. This imprint or “imago” represents what  is familiar, and over time, it becomes an unconscious guiding force in our life drawing us to people and experiences that will help us recreate our childhood feelings (both positive and negative feelings), so that we can heal our hurts.

Oprah Winfrey included "Imago Theory" in her list of "Unforgettable! Oprah’s Top 20 Shows."

How does Imago Therapy work?

Imago therapy is a process that is only provided by a trained Imago therapist, such as Michele O'Mara, LCSW here in Indianapolis.  Imago Therapy can assist in developing new strategies and techniques to communicate and connect in ways that offer healing and hope for an inspiring, loving relationship.

What qualifies Michele to work with our relationship?

After completing her graduate work in 1992, and practicing as a psychotherapist for nearly a decade, Michele returned to the classroom and successfully completed the intensive Certified Imago Relationship Therapists Training in 2002.  This training includes 96 hours of relationship-specific, clinical training, as well as rigorous clinical observations and supervision during training.

Michele completed her Imago relationship training with Imago Master Trainer Maya Kollman in Detroit, and  Michigan, and with Maureen Brine in Toronto, Canada.  She has also received additional intimacy, sex, and relationship training from Tammy Nelson, author of "Getting the Sex You Want," as well as Pat Love, author of "Hot Monogamy."
